You’ve made the decision to finally get rid of some of the excess “stuff” around the house, but you’d like to get some of your money back by selling those things. While everyone has heard of Facebook, many people don’t know how to sell on Facebook Marketplace. This online platform allows its users to list their items for sale in their local area and connect with interested buyers. For most items, using Facebook Marketplace is a fast way to get rid of things you no longer need, while getting a reasonable amount of money for your items in return. Unlike many other selling platforms, there are no selling fees and it’s free to use for both buyers and sellers.
Getting Started: How to Sell on Facebook Marketplace
If you’re wondering how to sell on Facebook Marketplace, it’s actually pretty simple and easy to do. To get started, take pictures of the items you want to sell, then go to the Facebook Marketplace, which can be found on both the Facebook website and app. Click on ‘Sell’, and then choose ‘Items’, and just fill in the blanks. There’s space to upload up to 10 photos, and then you create a title, a price, choose a category and the condition of the item, location, and write a short description. Post it and your done! Now you just wait for interested buyers to message you about it. Here are some tips to help you sell on the marketplace.
1 – Post Decent Pictures
Take several good pictures of your item and write a brief description. This will make your life easier and people will feel more comfortable buying from you. If your photos are not so good people will just scroll past your listing. But if you have decent pictures, your item is much more likely to sell and you’re less likely to have issues when you meet with the buyer because they know what they’re getting.
2 – Know How to Price Your Item
Before listing an item, search for that particular item on the marketplace. This will give you an idea of how many other people are selling it and for what price. You can also see if they have just listed theirs, or if it’s been posted for weeks without selling, which could indicate that it’s either priced too high or there’s not many people interested. If you want to sell your item as fast as possible and don’t really care about how much you get for it, price it lower than everyone else. Most items that are priced right sell very quickly on Facebook Marketplace.
If the item is something that’s currently in high demand and the price is competitive, you can get tons of people messaging you right away. It can get a little crazy, so when that happens and you find a person who commits to a time and place to meet, you can mark the item as “Pending Pick Up” so that you won’t get as many messages in the meantime. I like to have a couple back up buyers, so if others are interested, just tell them that you have someone coming to get it but you’ll let them know if they cancel. Don’t mark something as sold until you’ve actually sold it because people back out all the time.
Oftentimes people will try to negotiate a lower price, so if you’re really wanting to make a certain amount of money for something, you may want to start off with a little higher price (within reason) and then you’ll have room to negotiate. If you have lots of people interested in the item, there’s no need to negotiate and you can sell it for what you’re asking.
If your item doesn’t sell within a week, the price is probably too high and you may need to keep lowering it until you get interest. You can also re-list the item instead of editing the listing in order to get more views on the marketplace. Another reason something might not sell is that the item may not be something that people are really looking for right now. For items that are not currently in demand and haven’t had any interest on Facebook, you may want to try selling them on a different platform like Ebay, or consider donating it.
Facebook Marketplace also has the option where you can ship your item if you want to broaden your range of potential buyers farther than just your local area. This is optional, so if you don’t want to deal with shipping things, don’t select this option.
3 – Confirm the Meet Up Time
The amount of people who say they want to buy something and then never show up to meet you is very high with Facebook Marketplace. This can get very frustrating, so confirming your meet up time will help you not waste time waiting around for someone who isn’t going to show up. It will still happen, but much less often than if you don’t confirm. Message the buyer about an hour before to make sure they’re still good to meet, and if they don’t respond they most likely will not be showing up and you can move on to the next buyer.
4 – Don’t Give Out Your Phone Number
Personally, I never give out my phone number, even when requested. There’s no reason that people you don’t know need to have your number. Facebook makes it very easy to communicate through Facebook messenger, and even has the option to call someone through that app without using your phone number.
5 – Meet in a Public Place
Don’t get me wrong, most people are normal, everyday people and just want to buy your stuff. But you don’t know these people, so why take unnecessary risk? Meet buyers in a public place where you feel comfortable instead of having them come to your house. When possible, meet during daylight hours and take someone with you just to be safe. Sometimes people have come to the house, like to purchase larger items that don’t fit in your car. Just keep in mind that you decide who you want to sell to, and if someone comes across as strange or is rude, there’s no reason you need to sell to them. Just wait for another buyer.
Facebook groups are another place that you can post things for sale in your local community. You can search “buy and sell” in the Groups section on Facebook and look for these types of groups that are in your city or general area. Request to join and once you’re accepted you can list your items for sale by creating a post in that group.
Now that you know how to sell on Facebook Marketplace, you’re ready to start making some money! While it does take some time to create the listings and wait for the items to sell, it’s rewarding to see your stuff go to someone else who can use it, and make a little money back in the process.
